Jo Lane: Human Mesh

13 August - 21 September 2025

“Some philosophers have said that Homo sapiens, man the thinker, should be Homo faber, man the maker, because a defining characteristic of humans is the need to work, create, innovate and build. The things we make are externalisations of our existence. When we create the world around us, we create ourselves.”

Antonia Case, The Guardian, 09.07.23

Jo Lane’s Human Mesh is a mesmerising meditation on the intricacies that define our humanity. Using rock sewing, glass blowing, concrete puffing, stone threading and drawing, Lane creates a visceral tapestry of our internal worlds - thoughts, memories, and emotions - woven into our external selves.

Revealing the complex craftsmanship of the human spirit, Human Mesh invites reflection on the fragility and resilience that are intertwined within us, encouraging a deeper understanding of existence as a layered and complicated state.

Lane’s work reminds us that our true selves are crafted from the invisible, tangled textures that make us human. The term 'human mesh' in 3D animation similarly maps the contours of human form for realistic depiction, but Lane’s work evokes an irresistible terrain of the mind.
