Robert Delves’ intimate sculptures explore the complexities of the human condition. He embraces the power of the imaginative spirit to create unique and evocative works inspired by our relationship to the world around us, both physical and emotional.
Drawing remains central to Robert’s practice. Many of his sculptural works emerge from sketches which appear again, etched upon their finished forms. This circularity honours his sedulous practice in drawing and allows him to imbue his figurative forms with feeling.
Recent works embody Robert’s trust in the clay to guide him. Employing both hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques, he explores themes of human struggle, endurance, and transformation. The unique character of each figure is revealed as Robert uses glazing to explore tone, light, and shadow through a variety of textures and finishes.
With a career spanning over 30 years, he has exhibited widely in solo and group exhibitions across Australia. His works are held in public and private collections around Australia and internationally.
